As the position of Community Paediatrician was a newly created one, I had the unique privilege of developing the service while keeping in mind the needs of the community. In the last 8 years some of the work done included the following

  • 2011 : The HEARTS Project aimed to improve outcomes for children in out of home care. The acronym stood for H – Health E – Education A – Activities R – Records T – Tracking S – Supports.. HEARTS helped with setting up a clinic, data linkages, research in OOHC and established ongoing links with the Child safety service
  • 2012 : Community Paediatric Outreach clinics Outreach clinics enabled us to see children and families near their homes and improved clinic attendance as well as improved links with the community organisations. We have outreach clinics in Bridgewater Geeveston, Sorrel and Clarence.
  • 2013: Paediatric Sexual Abuse Care : 24 hour service and Peer review meetings We have a 24 hour on call roster and cases referred in the previous month are discussed. in our monthly multidisciplinary meetings attended by Police, child safety, sexual assault support and forensic services .The peer review process and interagency collaboration has been an incredible learning experience for all.
  • 2014: TAS Child Safety Network Vision: facilitating change to prevent child abuse and neglect in Tasmania.To share information about best practice in this field; To date we have had the following workshops Protective behaviours, Problematic sexualised behaviours, Impact of family Violence on children and their developing brains, Nonviolent Communication and Sleep.
  • 2015: Community paediatrics advance trainee teaching program A weekly teaching schedule for advance trainees on Child protection/ Development and behaviour related topics is offered to all Community paediatric and advance trainees in the state by videoconferencing facilitates
  • 2016 Complex Behaviour Multidisciplinary Meeting : Monthly meetings to discuss 4 complex cases which are attended by appropriate School staff, Child Safety , Child Psychiatry ,early intervention police and Community Paediatrics team as well as other professionals to share understanding and develop a therapeutic plan for the children discussed
  • 2017: Development and Behaviour Assessments in a training Clinic The focus this year was in setting up a development and Behaviour training clinic undertaking assessments e.g. Griffiths, ADOS under supervision.
  • 2018: Interstate Collaborations: Tasmanian Gender Service and FASD assessment workshops Tasmanian Gender Service was set up by us in collaboration with the CAMHS service where children with Gender dysphoria are managed as per the need. We sought guidance from RCH gender Clinic.
    FASD ( etal Alcohol spectrum disorder ) assessment workshops and Referral Pathways for the state are being developed by Community Paediatric team in collaboration with FASD Tasmania and Patches- Western Australia
